What is 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) and how to use an authenticator app

Keeping your online accounts secure is more important than ever. Passwords alone are no longer enough to protect you from hackers, data breaches, or unauthorized access. That’s where 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) comes in.

2FA adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring two different forms of verification before you can log in. Even if someone steals your password, they still can’t get in without the second factor.

What Is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

2FA is a security method that requires two steps to verify your identity:

  • Something you know — your password
  • Something you have — usually your phone, used to generate a code

With 2FA enabled, after you enter your password, you’ll be asked to provide a six-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. This code changes every 30 seconds, making it extremely difficult for attackers to guess or reuse.

What Is an Authenticator App?

An authenticator app is a mobile app that generates time-based one-time codes (TOTP). These codes change automatically every 30 seconds.

Popular authenticator apps include:

  • Google Authenticator
  • Microsoft Authenticator
  • Authy
  • 1Password / LastPass Authenticator

These apps do not require an internet connection to work and are typically more secure than SMS text messages.

How to enable 2FA

Sign in to your account, navigate to the Account section from your avatar menu, click it and then scroll down to the Security settings.

  1. Click "Enable 2FA" button, modal will appear.
  2. Scan QR code with your authenticator app, do not close the modal.
  3. Enter 6 digit code.
Now every time you sign in, you’ll enter your password and the code from your authenticator app.
