Mailchimp connection

Add or update subscribers in a Mailchimp audience from survey responses. Grow your email list and enrich subscriber profiles with survey data.

Overview

The Mailchimp connection adds a new subscriber to your chosen audience for each survey response, or updates an existing subscriber if the email address already exists. You map survey questions to merge fields to capture additional subscriber data like name, location, or preferences.

Prerequisites

  • A Mailchimp account with at least one audience

  • A survey that collects an email address

Setup

Step 1: Connect your Mailchimp account

Select an existing connected Mailchimp account or click Connect an account to authenticate with Mailchimp via OAuth.

Step 2: Select an audience

Choose the Mailchimp audience (list) where subscribers should be added. The available merge fields will load automatically from your audience settings.

Step 3: Map fields

Map your survey questions to Mailchimp merge fields. You must map at least one question to the email address field — this is required for every subscriber. Additional merge fields like name, address, and custom fields are optional.

Step 4: Set trigger rules

Choose which response statuses trigger the sync: Complete, Disqualified, or Over Quota. You can also add conditions to filter which responses are sent. For example, only add subscribers who opted in to marketing communications.

Field mapping

Each survey question can be mapped to a merge field in your Mailchimp audience. Centiment formats values based on the merge field type: text, number, date, email, address, and more. Make sure your audience has the right merge fields set up in Mailchimp before mapping.

The email address mapping is handled separately and is always required. This is the field Mailchimp uses to identify subscribers.

Duplicate handling

Mailchimp uses email address as a unique identifier. If a response contains an email that already exists in the audience, the existing subscriber's merge fields are updated with the new data rather than creating a duplicate.

Backfill

When first enabled, existing responses that match your trigger rules are automatically synced to Mailchimp.

Good to know

  • Make sure your survey collects a valid email address. Without it, the subscriber cannot be created.

  • If you're using the Pending status, subscribers won't appear as active until they confirm via Mailchimp's opt-in email.

  • Merge fields must be created in your Mailchimp audience settings before they'll appear for mapping in Centiment.
