How to enable microphone access in your browser
If you see an error saying “The browser could not access the microphone”, it usually means microphone permissions are blocked in your browser or device settings.
Follow the steps below for your browser to enable microphone access and use voice-to-text successfully.
Before You Start
Make sure that:
- Your microphone is connected and working
- No other app (Zoom, Teams, etc.) is currently using the microphone
You have refreshed the page after making changes
Google Chrome
- Open the page where you’re using voice-to-text
- Click the lock icon in the address bar
- Find Microphone
- Set it to Allow
- Refresh the page
Alternative method
- Go to chrome://settings/content/microphone
- Select the correct microphone
Make sure the site is not listed under Blocked
Safari (macOS)
- Open Safari
- Click Safari in the top menu → Settings
- Go to the Websites tab
- Select Microphone
- Find the site and set it to Allow
- Refresh the page
Also check macOS settings
- Open System Settings
- Go to Privacy & Security → Microphone
- Make sure Safari is enabled
Microsoft Edge
- Open the page where you’re using voice-to-text
- Click the lock icon in the address bar
- Set Microphone to Allow
- Refresh the page
Alternative method
- Go to edge://settings/content/microphone
- Choose the correct microphone
- Make sure the site is not blocked
Mozilla Firefox
- Open the page where you’re using voice-to-text
- Click the microphone icon or lock icon in the address bar
- Allow microphone access for the site
- Refresh the page
If previously blocked
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security
- Scroll to Permissions → Microphone
- Click Settings
- Remove the site from the blocked list
Mobile Browsers (iOS & Android)
iOS (Safari / Chrome)
- Open Settings
- Scroll to your browser app
- Tap Microphone
- Set it to Allow
Android (Chrome)
- Open Settings
- Go to Apps → Chrome → Permissions
- Enable Microphone
Still Not Working?
If microphone access is enabled and the issue persists:
- Refresh the page
- Restart your browser
- Try a different browser
- Check system-level microphone permissions
